Melbourne Public Art Trails

You will enjoy getting a free map of Melbourne, Victoria, from the Visitor Information Centre in Federation Square, putting on your walking shoes and following the public art trails. A walk round the streets and lanes of inner city Melbourne and over the Yarra River will show you most of Melbourne's public art works.

Wander down Hosier Lane to see the unique light boxes light up works by both international and local artists. Enjoy the stencil graffiti and be one of the three hundred thousand people per week to view this fantastic public art.

For an outdoor public art gallery, stroll along the Yarra River and view the Birrarung Marr precinct: listen to the Federation Bells play a number of times per day. These 39 bells were designed as sculptures and show us the numerous functions of bells. You will find yet more public art here as well:

Proximities is a sound installation which is a tribute to Australia's diversity. Voice recordings from all 53 Commonwealth nations represented in Australia as well as the area's indigenous peoples evoke the various backgrounds which now make up Australia.

In a similar vein, the public art trail will lead you to the Sandridge Bridge which houses The Travellers. The bridge was used by thousands of immigrants to begin their new lives.

For yet more public art in Melbourne, you will find, underneath Flinders Street station, in Campbell Arcade, display cases from the Platform Artist Group. Viewed by all who use the platforms, this is one more instance of Melbourne's free public art spaces.
